Our 5 Top Tips For Extending The Life Of Your Awnings

You’ve spent time and money installing awnings, and you want to make sure they last.  It’s not difficult – simple routine maintenance will help extend the life of your awnings and ensure that they look their best all year round.
At Complete Blinds, we believe that a few minutes spent on your awnings each month will save you a sea of frustration and trouble down the track…

What are your awnings made of?  Obviously, the style and materials used will have a big impact on the amount and type of maintenance required.  Are they canvas or metal?  Retractable or fixed? Do you live in a coastal environment?

Because they’re outside and exposed to the elements, your awnings will naturally pick up a certain amount of dust, dirt, leaves and spider webs.  And let’s make this clear: that’s no reflection on your cleaning standards!  It’s just a fact of life, and one we must deal with.

So, let’s get started:

Metal Awnings

Complete Blinds supply awnings of top-quality material and design, which means that our metal awnings require very little maintenance.  A regular brush down with a broom or gentle scrub with water and mild detergent will keep them free of leaves and dust.  If you notice mildew on the awnings, try cleaning the affected area with a pressure washer.  Keep the underside of the awnings free of spider webs and dust using a cobweb broom.

Canvas Awnings

It’s super important to keep your canvas awnings as clean as possible because a buildup of dust, dirt and grit will eventually undermine the integrity of the fabric.  For optimum care, add this simple task into your weekly cleaning schedule: using a broom, brush the awnings down regularly to keep them free of dust, dirt and spider webs.  Then, every few months wash your awnings using water and a mild detergent, giving them a gentle scrub with a cleaning brush. This will ensure that dust, bird droppings and grit are thoroughly removed.   Be sure to rinse them well to ensure all traces of soap are removed from the fabric.

If you notice mildew on the fabric, clean the affected area with a damp cloth and specialist mildew remover, following the manufacturer’s instructions.  Do not use bleach on canvas awnings.

Retractable Awnings

Here are a few tips for extending the life of your retractable awnings:

  • Keep them down during high winds and storms
  • Do not hang objects off the awnings
  • Do not allow water to pool on the awning
  • Oil moving parts of the awning in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions

Coastal environments

Salt on powder-coated surfaces can damage them.  So, if you live close to the coast, it’s super important that you keep the metal components of your awnings free from salt buildup.  Clean the metal poles and supports regularly using a lukewarm water and mild detergent solution and rinse thoroughly.

Re-covering

A time may come when the fabric of your awnings looks a bit tired and shabby.  At Complete Blinds, we offer a re-covering service allows you to give your awnings a whole new lease of life by only replacing the fabric, not the whole structure!  Re-covering can often be carried out onsite, minimizing disruption to your family or business life.
