When ordering new blinds you probably don’t take into consideration Window Coverings & Child Safety. Blinds are a necessary furnishing to your home, every house has them so it is important to know how window coverings & child safety affect each other and ways that you can minimise the risk.

Window Coverings & Child Safety: Did you Know?

The cords on your window coverings are the most dangerous part of a window covering for children.

It’s not something you’re probably thinking of when looking to purchase some blinds or curtains. Let’s face it, colours and styles are probably at the forefront of your mind. However, when it comes to addressing the safety of your windows really is a factor that you need to consider, especially if you have children.

Blinds, curtains and other window coverings can have a cord that allows one to raise, lower, open or close the blinds or curtains. Blind and curtain cords can present a strangulation hazard to children, as children can become entangled in them if they pull on them. Even with raised the cords will drop low in reach of the children. To minimise this risk, make sure that cords are kept away from children and furniture such as chairs, tables and cots aren’t placed under windows so that children don’t climb up to reach the cords.

  • 1-2 Australian children die each year after being strangled by blind or curtain cords
  • between 2001-2008, there were at least 11 deaths in Australia. Nine of these were of children under three years of age
  • in the US, a child aged between 7 months and 10 years dies each month after being strangled on curtain and blind cords.
