Blinds and Curtains Choices

Whether you have blinds and curtains or shutters and shades, window treatments have the ability to transform any room in the home into something fabulous. It’s important that you select the blinds and curtains that are the right fit in your home.

Colour, material, length and style are all factors which need to be taken into considerations when you are selecting your window treatments. You can also choose to have your window coverings custom-made as opposed to the ready manufactured types. With the huge variety available, it can be easy to becom frustrated trying to decide which is the right one for you. In these cases, sometimes it’s best to simply break down the selection process.

Blinds and Curtains Material Selection

The choice of the fabric will affect the style of a room and will also impact the longevity of the blinds and curtains. Lightweight and thin fabrics tend to be less durable than the heavier lined fabric however, you may find the heavier fabrics do not drape or hang the way you would like. Sometimes it can be very handy to keep sample swatches so you can see how particular fabrics will look in the different rooms in your home and how the colours will look with the furniture and paint. When a room receives a large amount of sunlight through the window, you may wish to choose darker fabric as this will prevent fading over time. Neutral colours can also be a safe bet as they can blend into most environments. Another option is for wooden blinds which have been a staple design for many years. Wooden blinds are very durable and also attractive in any home. If wooden blinds do not provide the look you want there are plenty of other designs aswell such as roman blinds, vertical blinds and roller blinds. Roman blinds offer privacy and elegance at the same time and are available in an array of fabrics and pattern. Vertical blinds are a contemporary window treatment option made of fabric slats which can be opened and closed through a chain pulley whereas roller blinds offer a simple and effective window dressing option which can be operated manually. There are many blind types to select from and each has an array of designs and colours as well.

Perfect Length For Blinds And Curtains

When you are looking for blinds and curtains it’s always important to first decide how high above the windows you want them to hang. Hanging panels higher than the window will allow for an increased sense of height to a room. Most decorators will hang curtains 6 inches above the frame. Measuring from the top of the window (plus the added height of where the curtain or blind will begin from) up until the floor, will give an idea of how much fabric is needed. Add an extra 2-4 inches to the length for a classical look. It advisable to add 2-4 inches extra on both sides, when measuring the width of a window,  and then double the total number to ensure there is enough curtain to open and close comfortably as well as block out any sunlight creeping in from the side. Smaller sized windows look best when decorated with roller blinds or even Roman blinds, which do not over complicate and over-power the window itself.

Custom-Made or Ready-Made
