If you check your dictionary or more realistically type 'What are Window Awnings?' into Google,…
With the rain pouring down outside, you might find yourself wondering if it’s o.k. to be using your retractable awning. It’s certainly a good point to raise, and one that’s worth spending a few minutes talking about, so read below to get an understanding of how to get the best out of your awnings this winter.
Retractable awnings – also known as spring-loaded awnings, are an excellent investment for both residential and commercial properties. They provide shelter from the wind, rain and sunshine, and add an extra zone where you can chill out and relax, entertain family and friends, and allow the children to play without getting sunburned. In addition, by protecting the building from direct sunlight, they help to reduce heating and cooling costs and protect furniture and floor coverings against harmful UV rays.
Most of us use our awnings all year round – we want to enjoy the benefits of our investment in both summer and winter!
However, in the interest of safety, there are some circumstances when it’s safer to button down the hatches and retract the awnings…
Moderate Rain/Wind
When the rain tumbles down (in July!) it’s a case of using your common sense when it comes to your awnings. Retractable awnings are installed at an angle which allows the rain to run off them, therefore preventing pooling and sagging. The design of our awnings is strong and robust and will sustain a certain amount of wind and rough weather.
Extreme Weather Conditions
If you are expecting extreme weather conditions such as high winds, very heavy rain or heavy snow, it’s wise to retract your awnings for both your own safety and the safety of the structure. Ideally, the awnings should be put away before the storm hits so that they’re dry, however if you are forced to retract it when it’s wet, ensure that you extend it again as soon as the weather settles down, and allow it to dry fully.
